BitLocker: Great Security — Until It Locks You Out

Contact us

If you’re using a Windows laptop, there’s a good chance BitLocker is quietly running in the background keeping your files safe. It’s an excellent security feature — until it locks you out of your own system.

What Happened

I recently helped a customer who had their new computer set up by another company. Everything seemed fine — until three days later when BitLocker suddenly kicked in.

When they turned their laptop on, they were greeted with the dreaded message:

“Enter BitLocker recovery key to unlock your drive.”

They did the right thing — they tried logging into their Microsoft account to retrieve the recovery key. But the key wasn’t there. The company who set it up couldn’t help either.

Unfortunately, without that 48-digit key, there’s no way around it. The only option was a full factory reset, meaning all their data was lost.

Why This Happens

BitLocker automatically activates on many Windows 10 and 11 devices — especially if you sign in with a Microsoft account. It’s designed to protect your data in case your laptop is lost or stolen.

The recovery key is supposed to be saved to your Microsoft account, but if:

  • The setup wasn’t done properly,

  • You used a local account instead of a Microsoft one, or

  • The key was saved to an account you no longer have access to…

Then you’re effectively locked out of your own system.

How to Prevent This

Take five minutes today to check where your BitLocker recovery key is stored. It could save you a world of pain later.

✅ Option 1: Check Your Microsoft Account

  1. Go to https://account.microsoft.com/devices/recoverykey

  2. Sign in with your Microsoft account

  3. Look for your device and make sure the key is listed

  4. Print or save a copy somewhere safe (not on the same computer!)

✅ Option 2: Back It Up from Windows

  1. Open Control Panel → System and Security → BitLocker Drive Encryption

  2. Next to your drive, click “Back up your recovery key”

  3. Choose Print the recovery key or Save to a file

Store it securely with your important documents or in a password manager.

BitLocker is brilliant when used correctly  it protects your data from theft and tampering. But without that recovery key, not even Microsoft (or your IT technician!) can get you back in.

So please — check your recovery key now and keep a copy somewhere safe.
